May 29 - National Biscuit Day

Books

Okay, that's not what they mean, but who can resist this cute series? They run through a variety of topics that you can work into your other home schooling topics. They even have phonics sets for your early readers!

Science

When cats knead their paws we say they are "making biscuits", What does it mean when they do that? Are they happy? Scared? Sad? What are some other ways animals show us how they are feeling through body language?

Social Studies

What happens when you ask for biscuits in the United Kingdom? You get cookies! What other words vary from British to American English? We'll get you started:

swimsuit = bather
apartment = flat
sweater = jumper
sneakers = trainers

Food and Math

Of course we need to make and eat biscuits! Canned totally counts, but it's good to make drop or rolled biscuits once or twice just so you know you can. Here is the recipe we used for these strawberry shortcake biscuits:

But we just used canned for our biscuits and gravy!

Of course, anytime we are cooking, we are using math. Double the recipe to practice adding fractions!

Tying in with our book series, we can also make biscuits for the dogs! Here is a recipe for healthy dog treats. Don't have a dog? Make some for the local dog shelter. Or, sell them and donate the money to get dogs spayed or neutered! If you happen to be local, let me know and I can hook you up with our dog treat 'source'. More with math: calculate how much it costs to make a batch of dog biscuits, then figure out how much you need to sell them for to make a profit.
