April 11 - Barbershop Quartet Day

The barbershop is where the magic happens. Boys go in as lumps of clay and, with princely robes draped around their shoulders, a dab of cool shaving cream on their foreheads, and a slow, steady cut, they become royalty. That crisp yet subtle line makes boys sharper, more visible, more aware of every great thing that could happen to them when they look good: lesser grades turn into As; girls take notice; even a mother’s hug gets a little tighter. Everyone notices.

A fresh cut makes boys fly.

Crown won...well, just about everything its publication year. Look at all those pretty shiny medals! And they are well-deserved! You can read my earlier review here. How does a new haircut or style make you feel? Or just having freshly washed hair? Talk about when others get a new haircut, and how they can actually feel a little insecure if it's a big change. Compliment them! Always compliment them!

After moving to the city, four sheep companions try in vain to find acceptance in the human world. But when they enter a barbershop quartet competition in the mistaken belief they'll be meeting other sheep, they discover that they don't have to blend in to belong.

Listen to some barbershop quartet music online and see if you can pick out the different voices harmonizing together. Would it sound as interesting if everyone just sang the melody? Bring up some songs by the group Pentatonix for some good chills down your back!

Duck and his friends are at it again. But this time they’re pooling their considerable resources to win a local talent show, because first prize is a trampoline!

The cows want to sing.

The sheep want to sing.

The pigs want to...dance.
Dance?

And Duck? Duck just wants to win that trampoline. But first he’ll have to handle Farmer Brown.

Art

How would you look with a mohawk? A curly perm? How would Mom or Dad look with pink spiked hair??

Print out photographs of each family member, and take turns giving each other wild new hair styles!

Maybe try some temporary changes, dig out the leftover Halloween makeup, and have your own Crazy Hair Day!

Language Arts

What makes you feel good about yourself? A new haircut? New clothes? Doing well on a test? Praise from a certain person? Write a page or two about things that make you feel good, then think about ways you can make others feel good about themselves too.

Music (or not)

Pretend you are joining that talent show along with Duck and friends. What would you do? Sing a song? Do a dance? Balance spoons on your nose? No limits! Challenge each member of your family to choose and practice a talent, then put on your very own family talent show! Video tape it to share with friends and family online (Miss Ami would love to see it, too!)

What exactly IS a barbershop quartet, anyway? Find some videos on YouTube and see if there are any songs you would like to learn together.

Have a family member who just can't sing? Here's a possible (and funny) solution:

My kids LOVE the I Love Lucy show! Can you find some episodes to watch online? Talk about how marriage roles and other things have changed over the years (the episode where she has a baby...oh my goodness!!)
